Hiking in the Pitztal Valley

The most beautiful walks starting from the Hotel Mittagskogel

The Pitztal Valley is one of the wildest and most unspoilt hiking areas in Tyrol. Anyone who has experienced the tranquillity of the Pitztal mountains once will keep coming back. From our 4-star hotel in Mandarfen, you can set off straight into a hiker’s paradise — the Rifflseebahn cable car is literally next door, and in just a few minutes you’ll find yourself at an altitude of over 2,000 metres.

The best hiking trails from Hotel Mittagskogel

1. Rifflsee Circular Walk (moderate · 3–4 hours)
Take the Rifflsee cable car directly from the hotel up to 2,232 m. From there, a magnificent circular route leads around the crystal-clear Rifflsee. The panoramic mountain views of the surrounding three-thousand-metre peaks are breathtaking. Ideal for families — the path is well signposted and technically straightforward. Elevation gain: approx. 300 m.

2. Pitztaler Jöchl (challenging · 5–6 hours)
For experienced mountain walkers: the Pitztaler Jöchl at 3,108 m offers a panoramic view that is second to none. On clear days, you can see as far as the Swiss Alps. Equipment: sturdy hiking boots, walking poles, warm jacket — it can get chilly at the summit even in summer.

3. Kaunergrat Nature Park (easy–moderate · 2–3 hours)
The Kaunergrat Nature Park offers peaceful panoramic trails through unspoilt alpine pastures. Rare alpine flowers bloom here in summer. Highly recommended for nature lovers and families with children.

4. Wildspitze Base Camp (mountaineering · full day)
The Wildspitze (3,770 m) is the highest mountain in North Tyrol. Experienced mountaineers can book a guided tour from our hotel — our partners at the Pitztal Mountain Guides’ Association organise professionally guided high-altitude tours.

Practical tips for your hike

Set off early — ideally before 9 am — to avoid afternoon thunderstorms. The weather in the high mountains can change quickly. The following applies to all hikes: take plenty of water with you (at least 2 litres), sun protection, and let reception know your planned route.
Pitztal Summer Card: As a hotel guest, you can use the Rifflseebahn and other mountain cable cars free of charge every day — this not only saves you money but also opens up a whole range of new hiking options.

After your hike: Relax at the hotel

After a long day in the mountains, our indoor pool awaits you, filled with mountain water heated to 29°C. The sauna area (daily 15:30–19:00) with an aroma sauna, Finnish sauna and steam room soothes tired muscles. And in the Mittagskogel Lounge and on the sun terrace, with its stunning views of the Pitztal mountains, you can raise a glass to an unforgettable day’s hiking.
